House approves new Israeli partnership legislation

Congressional leaders rallied behind a measure approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday that would strengthen ties between the United States and Israel.

House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said the legislation would deepen cooperation between the countries in defense technology, border security, cyber security and energy.

“This legislation builds upon the U.S.-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act, adopted by the House and signed into law in 2012, which institutionalized the deep military and security ties between the United States and the State of Israel and reiterated America’s unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security and international stability,” Cantor said.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) co-authored a section of the bill that would strengthen collaboration between the two countries in the development of energy.

“…With a simple amendment to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, this legislation will help bolster the partnership between Israel and the U.S. on energy production and help enhance energy security,” Upton said. “With America’s assistance, Israel can further develop its natural resources, including newly-discovered natural gas reserves….”

The measure would also direct the president to report to Congress on the feasibility of establishing a joint cyber security center and take steps to make Israel eligible for a strategic trade authorization exemption.
