GOP predicts gaining seats in House, Senate

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) predicted on Tuesday that Republicans would gain seats in the House of Representatives and possibly take control of the Senate in upcoming mid-term elections.

Cantor said Republicans would continue to pursue policies that create opportunities for the middle class enroute to electoral success.

“Think about the working middle class right now that is traveling across the George Washington Bridge or anywhere else in the country, they really aren’t focused on electoral politics right now, they’re focused on what Washington can do to help them, to help them get back to work, to help them see a bigger paycheck and have more opportunity,” Cantor said.

In the House, elections will be held for all 435 seats on Nov. 4. Republicans, with 232 seats, hold the majority. Democrats currently hold 199 seats.

Thirty-six Senate seats will be on the ballot this fall. Democrats currently hold a 53 to 45 majority over Republicans.

National Republican Campaign Committee Executive Director Liesl Hickey recently forecasted a favorable 2014-election cycle for Republicans because Democrats have not achieved accountability and transparency promised to voters.

Hickey also said Democrats would have a difficult time campaigning on the Affordable Care Act and would have a difficult time holding current House seats, let alone gaining more.
