Gardner bill targets waste disposal

Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) said on Friday that a measure he introduced would eliminate duplicative waste disposal regulations on businesses that hamper economic recovery and growth.

The Reducing Deadline Obligations Act would eliminate compliance deadlines businesses outlined in the Solid Waste Disposal Act and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

“Listening to the concerns of my constituents is one of the most important aspects of my service in Congress, and I have heard from an overwhelming number of people while traveling the fourth congressional district – including many small business owners and elected officials – who have voiced their deep frustrations with regulations that are duplicative and unnecessary,” Gardner said.

Gardner’s bill would also allow the EPA to revise and review the Solid Waste Disposal Act whenever it’s necessary, rather than every three years, which is the current standard.

“Solid waste must be disposed of in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner, but there is no need for unnecessary regulations that put a strain on businesses,” Gardner said. “While our economy continues to sputter along, commonsense revisions of rules and regulations are a vital component of helping our state and local economies grow.”

The bill would also prohibit the EPA from imposing duplicative regulations on solid waste disposal in states that already have adequate protections in place.
