House Oversight Committee turns up heat on Delphi salaried retirees investigation

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) announced on Friday that the House Oversight Committee will continue its investigation into the Obama administration’s involvement in Delphi employee pension decisions.

Turner said a recently released report by the Special Inspector General on the Department of Treasury’s role in the decision for General Motors to provide pension payments to Delphi employees contradicts previous Congressional testimony.

Vincent Snowbarger, the former deputy director of operations at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, previously testified before the committee. He said that the Treasury Department did not have a role in the decision to terminate the pension plan of Delphi’s salaried workers during its bankruptcy resolution.

Turner, a senior member of the committee, said the recent report discredits the testimony. The reports revealed that Matthew Feldman from the department’s Auto Team negotiated with PBGC on behalf of General Motors.

“The report clearly highlights Treasury stepping in and perverting the process of the bankruptcy, using their influence to make certain that the outcome was politically desirable to the administration,” Turner said. “That’s enough for us to continue to push on the congressional side for a resolution to this.”

Congress recently sent subpoenas to the Treasury Department to intensify the investigation into the administration’s treatment of Delphi’s unionized employees.
