Smith responds to executive actions about immigration

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) last week outlined his opposition to the Department of Justice and President Barack Obama’s decision to pursue an emergency court order concerning immigration.
The administration has pushed for an emergency court order that will advance the president’s executive actions pertaining to immigration.
“It comes as no surprise that the most partisan and imposing Department of Justice of our time would rush to defend the president’s lawless actions,” Smith said. “Putting a stop to these overreaching executive actions isn’t about Republicans or Democrats; it’s about respecting and restoring the rule of law. This is why it’s even more important that Senate Democrats stop playing politics with the Constitution and stop blocking House legislation that would halt the president’s executive overreach.”
A Texas judge on Feb. 16 issued an injunction that has stopped the application of President Obama’s executive actions concerning immigration. Smith and 169 members of Congress have signed a letter supporting the lawsuit filed by 26 states and pressing Senate Democrats to pass House-approved legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security in full while simultaneously removing all funding for President Obama’s executive actions.
