Black applauds Tennessee’s decision to join immigration lawsuit

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) praised her home state on Monday for joining other states in a lawsuit that challenges President Barack Obama’s executive action on the United States’ immigration policies.

“I applaud Attorney General (Herbert H.) Slattery’s decision to join this fight against the president’s overreach,” Black said. “The president has overstepped his authority to put the interests of those who break our laws over those who come here legally and over the 200,000 Tennesseans who remain out of work. This action cannot stand and we must fight this on every front – whether through the courts or Congress.”

In November, Black along with more than two dozen of her fellow lawmakers filed an amicus brief in federal court to block the president’s directive. The brief states that the executive action “changes the law and sets a new policy, exceeding Defendants’ constitutional authority and disrupting the delicate balance of powers.”

“I was proud to join 26 of my colleagues recently supporting this lawsuit,” Black stated. “In addition, I have introduced stand-alone legislation that would stop funding for the president’s action that I will reintroduce early next Congress.”
