Tillis, fellow GOP members call for G7-coordinated sanctions against Iran

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) joined nine of his Republican colleagues in urging President Joe Biden to immediately convene the G7 nations and take coordinated action to further isolate Iran with severe sanctions for backing the terrorist group Hamas, which over the weekend committed atrocities against Israel.

“The terror and devastation unleashed on Israel over the last 72 hours by Iran-backed Hamas terrorists has rightly horrified the world,” Sen. Tillis and his colleagues wrote in an Oct. 10 letter sent to the president. “Now, our great ally Israel is in a fight for its very existence.”

The senators noted that the United States and its allies can no longer ignore the reality that the brutal attacks against innocent civilians are being carried out by terrorists from Hamas and Palestinian Jihad that are financed by Iran.

“Iran is not a normal country,” they wrote. “It is not a negotiating partner nor does it pretend to follow the rules based order of the civilized world.”

Every dollar within the grasp and control of the Iranian regime is used to fund terrorism and fuel its power, according to their letter, and by isolating Iran and cutting it off economically, the country would be unable to fund the mass terror it supports around the globe.

“Now, it falls on you as President of the United States to lead the freedom-loving world,” Sen. Tillis and the lawmakers wrote. “We must punish the evil Iranian regime, which remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, and deny its ability to continue supporting the brutality witnessed in Israel from ever occurring again.”

Among the lawmakers who joined Sen. Tillis in signing the letter were U.S. Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Deb Fischer (R-NE).
