LaHood’s bipartisan bill authorizes coin celebrating Lincoln Memorial’s 100th anniversary

U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) on Feb. 9 introduced a bipartisan bill that would require the U.S. Treasury Secretary to mint commemorative coins in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Rep. LaHood sponsored H.R. 6681 with original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) to honor the 100-year-old memorial for U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who served as a United States congressman representing their home state of Illinois prior to being elected as the nation’s 16th president.

“The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most recognized buildings in the world, honoring Lincoln’s legacy and our country,” Rep. LaHood said. “I am proud to join Congressman Krishnamoorthi on this legislation that will help ensure the Lincoln Memorial remains a beacon of hope and freedom, not just in the United States, but around the world for generations to come.”

The funds raised through the sale of the commemorative coin would support the long-term maintenance fund for the Lincoln Memorial, according to information provided by Rep. LaHood’s office.

“As the representative of the same district that Abraham Lincoln once served in Congress, I am proud to have worked to commemorate his legacy both in Illinois and Washington, D.C.,” said Rep. LaHood.

H.R. 6681 has been endorsed by Catherine Townsend, president and CEO of the Trust for the National Mall, which would manage the maintenance fund for the Lincoln Memorial in cooperation with the National Park Service.
