Carey sponsors bipartisan Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension Act

A bipartisan bill unveiled by U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) would extend federal tax incentives for the use of non-toxic and biodegradable biodiesel.

“Biodiesel is a homegrown resource that can support our long-term energy independence and support farmers, producers and energy workers right here in Ohio,” Rep. Carey said on July 24. “With America’s energy dominance at stake, we’re working across the aisle to strengthen our supply of biodiesel for the years to come.”

Biodiesel is a type of biofuel produced from a combination of soybean oil, recycled cooking oil and animal fats. Research from the EPA indicates that biodiesel emits 11 percent less carbon monoxide and 10 percent less particulate matter than diesel.

The Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension Act of 2024, H.R. 9060, which Rep. Carey sponsored on July 18 with lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH), would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the biodiesel fuels credit and the biodiesel mixture credit.

“Biodiesels are efficient and competitive alternatives to traditional diesel fuel sources and can play a critical role in accelerating the United States’ transition to a clean, carbon-neutral economy,” said Rep. Kuster, adding that H.R. 9060 would “help lower costs for small businesses and households… while reducing harmful emissions.”

The bill is supported by the National Association of Truck Stop Owners, the National Association of Convenience Stores, the American Trucking Associations, Energy Marketers of America, Small Advanced Biofuel Refiners, the National Energy and Fuel Institute, the Clean Freight Coalition, the Truckload Carriers Association, and SIGMA: America’s Leading Fuel Marketers.
