Young, Gardner, McSally introduce resolution commemorating Battle of Iwo Jima

U.S. Sens. Todd Young (R-IN), Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Martha McSally (R-AZ) on Feb. 13 introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution to honor the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

“Iwo Jima is hallowed ground for me, my fellow Marines, and all those who lost loved ones in the battle,” said Sen. Young. “This resolution helps to recognize those who gave their lives in Iwo Jima 75 years ago.”

Sen. Young sponsored Senate Resolution (S.Res.) 502 with 28 cosponsors, including Sens. Gardner and McSally, as well as U.S. Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Richard Burr (R-NC), and Mark Warner (D-VA).

U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) on Feb. 13 sponsored the identical House Resolution 857 with several cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Paul Cook (R-CA) and Pete Visclosky (D-IN).

“On the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, we remember the bravery and commitment exemplified by our U.S. Marines in that historic fight,” Sen. McSally said, who noted that the battle is “regarded as one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history” due to the death of nearly 7,000 American service members during the 36-day campaign.

“Our resolution commemorates the heroes who sacrificed their lives for our country and helped pave the way for the Allied victory in World War II,” added Sen. McSally.

Sen. Young pointed out that the resolution also “calls upon Americans to honor these veterans and reaffirm the deep bonds of friendship between the United States and Japan that have developed over the 75 years since we were at war.”

Sen. Gardner said that both the Iwo Jima battle and World War II changed the nation forever.

“Every day we must remember and honor the sacrifices of the brave Americans who prevailed in that epic conflict,” said Sen. Gardner. “Without them, this nation would not be what it is today. Without them, this nation may not have endured.”
