Walorski works across aisle on finding solutions to poverty

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) last week visited several Chicago-based organizations focused on decreasing poverty in America in her role as ranking member of the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support.

“Breaking the cycle of poverty requires collaboration at every level, and it means working across the aisle to fix what’s broken and build on what works,” Rep. Walorski said on Aug. 23.

Rep. Walorski joined U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support, to visit community leaders in Chicago to discuss bipartisan solutions for poverty-stricken Americans.

“I’m grateful to my friend and colleague Chairman Davis for sharing with me the passion and dedication at work across his community,” said Rep. Walorski. “As we continue our work together to help families thrive, I look forward to showing him how Hoosiers in my community are tackling similar problems and serving their neighbors in need.”

A similar joint tour in Rep. Walorski’s northern Indiana district is being planned for a later date, according to her staff.

While in Chicago, Rep. Walorski and her colleague learned about support services for family caregivers, youth in foster care, home visiting programs for at-risk families, transitional housing and job training for young mothers, and re-entry work programs for people with criminal records, according to a statement released by her office.

Rep. Davis praised the bipartisan efforts of Rep. Walorski “to identify real solutions to help vulnerable children, parents and workers succeed.”

“I am thankful to Ranking Member Walorski for dedicating an entire day to see first-hand some of the key Chicago programs that reduce child poverty, increase economic well-being, improve child safety, and support parents and grandparents,” he said. “I look forward to visiting Indiana very soon to learn about the successful programs in her community.”
