Valadao, Calif. colleagues seek reversal of state mandate for zero-emission vehicles

An August state mandate that requires 100 percent of new car sales in California to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035 should be revoked, according to U.S. Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) and his home-state Republican colleagues.

“The price of an electric vehicle is not a realistic option for many of my constituents in the Central Valley,” Rep. Valadao said in an Oct. 31 statement. “I urge Governor Newsom to reverse course on this misguided decision. We need to make it easier for California to produce safe, clean energy in our own backyard to lower costs and bring jobs and stability to families and businesses across California.”

Rep. Valadao and the California Republican delegation reiterated that stance in an Oct. 28 letter sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Air Resources Board Chairman Liane Randolph, calling on them to reconsider the adopted Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) regulation, which requires 35 percent electrification of light-duty vehicle sales by 2026 and 100 percent by 2035.

The ACCII policy, they wrote, strips away consumer choice, ignores market penetration, and imposes further economic hardship on Californians.

“There are far more effective and less costly means of reducing emissions that would also allow all vehicle powertrain technologies to compete,” wrote Rep. Valadao and his colleagues. “California policymakers and states following their lead should encourage innovation, bring fuel manufacturers in as part of the solution, and abstain from banning gas and diesel vehicle sales.”

Among the nine members who joined Rep. Valadao in signing the letter were U.S. Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Michelle Steel (R-CA), Mike Garcia (R-CA), Young Kim (R-CA), and Ken Calvert (R-CA).

“We must reiterate our concern with the recent unilateral measures taken by your administration, and we implore you to revoke these actions and reconsider a path forward that benefits all Californians and adheres to market realities,” the lawmakers wrote.
