Tillis commends FCC action to improve data collection, mapping for rural broadband

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) last week applauded action by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which on July 16 approved a new Digital Opportunity Data Collection plan to bolster data collection and mapping for rural broadband to close America’s digital divide.

“Bridging the digital divide in North Carolina continues to be a top priority of mine, and we must have accurate maps to see where we should direct funding and provide rural broadband in areas that need it most,” said Sen. Tillis, who had advocated for the move by the FCC.

Specifically, the FCC on Thursday adopted new rules for the improved collection and mapping of broadband availability data through the Digital Opportunity Data Collection that will better identify connectivity gaps across the country.

The commission also seeks comment on proposals to ensure the accuracy of the new broadband coverage maps by creating multiple paths for consumers, along with state, local, and tribal governments and other entities, to provide feedback on the maps directly to the FCC.

Sen. Tillis and nine of his U.S. Senate colleagues sent a March 2018 letter to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai expressing serious concerns about the agency’s broadband map used to determine broadband coverage in rural areas.

“I want to thank Chairman Pai for listening to our concerns regarding the maps released last year and working to expand this crucial service,” said Sen. Tillis.
