Steil leads 100 Republicans in unveiling election integrity bill

U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI) on July 11 led 100 Republicans in introducing sweeping legislation that would take a federalist approach to enhance voter confidence and encourage states to implement election integrity reforms by removing bureaucratic federal policies.

“The ACE Act is the most conservative election integrity legislation to be considered in the House in a generation,” said Rep. Steil, chairman of the U.S. House Administration Committee. “I look forward to bringing this critical legislation to the House floor.”

The 224-page American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act, H.R. 4563, would give state and county election officials access to the Social Security death list to maintain their voter rolls and would make it easier for states to use REAL ID to confirm citizenship, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Steil’s staff.

Among numerous other provisions, H.R. 4563 also would prohibit federal funds from going to places that allow non-citizens to vote; stop non-citizens from voting in Washington, D.C.; support military voters overseas and ensure their ballots are counted on time; and protect free speech and donor privacy, the summary says.

“As we saw in Georgia, when you pass strong election integrity legislation that makes it easier to vote and hard to cheat, Americans have more confidence in their elections and voter participation increases,” Rep. Steil said. “The ACE Act gives states the tools they need to increase voter participation and confidence in our elections. ”

The House Administration Committee chaired by Rep. Steil held five hearings as a part of the American Confidence in Elections series prior to the introduction of H.R. 4563.

Following the bill’s introduction on Tuesday, Rep. Steil led several GOP committee members on a field hearing at the Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta to discuss the measure.
