U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) on Nov. 20 helped approve legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would authorize more than $3.5 billion to bolster access to apprenticeships and expand the nation’s workforce.
“Northern Minnesota has several upcoming projects in mining, healthcare, construction, and other sectors. Today’s vote is a critical step in ensuring projects that will rejuvenate our economy move forward seamlessly,” Rep. Stauber said. “Therefore, I was proud to help advance registered apprenticeship programs and I hope the Senate does the same soon.”
The House voted 246-140 to advance the National Apprenticeship Act of 2020, H.R. 8294, to the U.S. Senate for action. The legislation was introduced in September by Democrats to provide statutory authority for the registered apprenticeship program within the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and provide for related grant programs, among numerous other provisions, according to the congressional record bill summary.
“As our nation works to overcome the COVID-19 crisis, it is more important than ever to give Americans tools to succeed,” said Rep. Stauber. “By investing in registered apprenticeship programs, the National Apprenticeship Act of 2020 will ensure Americans have access to programs that allow them to earn while they learn and find success in a wide range of industries.”
If enacted, H.R. 8294 also would codify the Office of Apprenticeships at the DOL and create a National Advisory Committee to advise on apprenticeships, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Stauber’s office.
The measure also would produce $10.6 billion in net benefits to American taxpayers through increased tax revenue and decreased spending on public assistance programs and unemployment insurance, the summary says.
