Smith offers Targeting TANF to Families in Need Act

U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) on Feb. 20 sponsored legislation that would improve how federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds are targeted to families in need.

The Targeting TANF to Families in Need Act, H.R. 7426, would direct states to ensure TANF assistance is earmarked to families with a household income below 200 percent of the federal poverty line. If enacted, the bill’s amendment to part A of title IV of the Social Security Act would take effect on Oct. 1, 2025.

Currently, no federal eligibility limits for TANF exist, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Smith’s staff.

“TANF is intended to provide assistance to the neediest Americans while also offering them the resources they need to connect with employment and be successful in the workforce,” Rep. Smith said. “This legislation ensures TANF implementation at the state level is aimed at achieving its intended goal.”

H.R. 7426 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.

“I look forward to working with my Ways and Means Committee colleagues to advance this bill and enhance the effectiveness of TANF programming,” said Rep. Smith.
