Moran unveils bill to improve price transparency for hotels, short-term rentals

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) wants to prohibit unfair and deceptive advertising of prices for hotel rooms and other short-term lodging.

“High prices are forcing Kansans to account for all their expenses, and they should not need to guess how much they will end up paying for a hotel room,” Sen. Moran said. “This common-sense legislation requires hotels and other short-term lodging providers to display and advertise the total price of their room, so Kansans can be certain that the listed price is what they will pay at check out.”

Sen. Moran on July 26 cosponsored the bipartisan Hotel Fees Transparency Act, S. 2498, with bill sponsor U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

“Too often, Americans making reservations online are being met with hidden fees that make it difficult to compare prices and understand the true cost of an overnight stay,” said Sen. Klobuchar. “This bipartisan legislation would help improve transparency so that travelers can make informed decisions.”

If enacted, when customers are booking a hotel room or short-term rental, the bill would dictate that they be provided with the total cost up front for their stay, according to a bill summary provided by the lawmakers, who are co-chairs of the Senate Travel and Tourism Caucus and members of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, which is considering S. 2498.

The measure is supported by the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
