Moolenaar sponsors TASK Act to protect vo-tech students

Services provided by certain individuals in postsecondary vocational institutions would not be treated as employment under a bill sponsored on Sept. 27 by U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI).

The Training Assignments for Student Knowledge (TASK) Act, H.R. 5742, aims to permit vocational schools to continue providing high-quality job training for students, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Moolenaar’s staff, which noted that recent legal efforts have sought to expand the definition of an employee to include these students.

Such efforts, says the summary, would drive up the cost of vocational education opportunities for students and make it harder for schools to offer job training programs.

“Vocational education provides students with affordable alternatives to college and allows them to gain the skills they need for good-paying jobs,” Rep. Moolenaar said. “It is vital that these courses remain available for students and the TASK Act would ensure this essential instruction remains affordable for students in Michigan and across the country.”

H.R. 5742 has been referred to the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee for consideration.
