Moolenaar answers Michigan employers with bill to reform federal trucking regulations

U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI) recently sponsored a bill to simplify federal trucking rules.

“This common-sense legislation will make it easier for trucking companies in Michigan and across the country to comply with the law as they move trucks across state lines to be rented or sold,” Rep. Moolenaar said on June 13.

Rep. Moolenaar on June 10 introduced H.R. 3184 to amend title 49 of the United States Code to increase the vehicle length limitation for truck tractor-lowboy trailer combinations, according to the congressional record.

If enacted, the bill would clarify the federal rules on certain transporters that move medium-duty trucks to permit the last truck on the hauler to safely overhang the end of the trailer, according to a summary provided by the congressman’s office.

While the trailers can safely accommodate such overhangs, there are times when the last truck on the trailer exceeds the 75-foot length allowed by federal law, according to the summary, which noted that H.R. 3184 would allow the last truck overhanging the trailer to exceed the 75-foot length.

“I am proud to meet with so many constituents and to work on behalf of hard-working Americans,” said Rep. Moolenaar, who his staff said has met with home-state trucking employers to hear their concerns about current regulations.

H.R. 3184 has been referred to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for consideration.
