U.S. Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV) on July 27 sponsored a bipartisan bill that would improve the understanding of and promote access to treatment for chronic kidney disease.
“This bill will provide the necessary resources and affordable access to treatment for patients suffering with chronic kidney disease in communities across West Virginia and the country,” Rep. Miller said. “This is the first step in preventing the ‘silent killer’ from taking more American lives.”
Rep. Miller introduced the Chronic Kidney Disease Improvement in Research and Treatment Act of 2023, H.R. 5027, with lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL).
If enacted, H.R. 5027 would expand the Medicare Annual Wellness Benefit to include kidney disease screening, support innovative kidney therapies within the End Stage Renal Disease payment bundle, and encourage the kidney care workforce in rural and underserved areas, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Miller’s office.
“West Virginia has the highest mortality rate of chronic kidney disease in the country, and I am working to change that,” said Rep. Miller. “The Chronic Kidney Disease Improvement in Research and Treatment Act is exactly what my constituents need. Being on the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, I’m focused on legislation that will benefit the health and well-being of my state.”
Kidney Care Partners, the American Kidney Fund, the Renal Support Network, and Dialysis Patient Citizens support H.R. 5027, which has been referred for consideration to both the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee and the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Sewell. “I’m so proud to introduce the Chronic Kidney Disease Improvement in Research and Treatment Act with Congresswoman Miller. This legislation will make critical improvements to the way patients with kidney disease, especially those in underserved communities, access and receive care.”
