Meijer signs onto bipartisan bill to protect materials in America’s semiconductor supply chain

U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) on April 1 signed on as the lead original cosponsor of the bipartisan Protecting Semiconductor Supply Chain Materials from Authoritarians Act.

“Congress must exercise its full authority to protect and preserve our supply chain — our economy and national security depend on it, and I am proud to join this bipartisan effort to do so,” Rep. Meijer said.

H.R. 7372, which is sponsored by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV), would amend the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 to establish a working group that would report on the semiconductor supply chain disruptions caused by Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, according to a bill summary provided by the lawmakers.

Additionally, the working group’s report would provide details on developing strategies for bolstering supplies of critical elements, compounds and products, and for monitoring potential threats to the semiconductor supply chain, the summary says.

“Since coming to Congress, it has been one of my top priorities to promote policies that ensure a robust domestic supply of semiconductors,” said Rep. Meijer. “The effects of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine are far reaching, and this legislation ensures we are properly considering the impact it has on our semiconductor supply chain.”

H.R. 7372, which is also cosponsored by U.S. Reps. Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee.
