McMorris Rodgers: Grants help home state ‘stand up and stop’ violence against women

U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) on Oct. 21 applauded millions in federal funding that will flow to her home state to support anti-violence programs for women.

“Together, we must stand up and stop violence of any kind here in our communities,” Rep. McMorris Rodgers said on Monday. “These grants help support efforts to combat violence against women and improve services for victims.”

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) announced $2.3 million in fiscal year 2019 grant awards that will be distributed in Washington State among several recipients in the congresswoman’s Fifth Congressional District.

The OVW grant recipients in the lawmaker’s state include the YWCA of Spokane, which received $599,819 for a Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program; the City of Spokane was awarded $750,000 to improve criminal justice responses to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the Spokane Tribe of Indians received $450,000 for a Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation Grant Program; and the End Violence Against Women International in Colville, Wash., was awarded $500,000 for its SAMFE Grant Program.

“Thank you to the Department of Justice and Trump administration for prioritizing the important work being done here in eastern Washington to keep our communities safe and secure,” said Rep. McMorris Rodgers.

The OVW currently administers 19 grant programs authorized by the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and subsequent legislation, and administers four formula grant programs, distributing funds according to the enacting legislation.
