McCormick’s bipartisan resolution supporting democracy in Pakistan passes House

The U.S. House of Representatives on June 25 overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan resolution sponsored by U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) to support democracy and human rights in Pakistan, where national elections in February were marred by civil unrest and reports of electoral irregularities.

“It is encouraging to see the allegations of interference in Pakistan’s recent elections being taken seriously,” Rep. McCormick said. “It is essential that the new government prioritizes democracy and human rights as they work towards economic stability and security for their country.”

The House on Tuesday voted 368-7 to approve House Resolution (H.Res.) 901, which is cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), and expresses strong support for democracy in Pakistan, including free and fair elections. Since its introduction on Nov. 30, 2023, the resolution has gained 102 more cosponsors.

Additionally, H.Res. 901 calls on the President of the United States to work with Pakistan to uphold democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, and urges Pakistan to uphold democratic institutions and human rights, according to the congressional record summary.

According to Rep. McCormick and his colleagues, Pakistan also continues to grapple with economic challenges and security threats posed by terrorist groups.

“I’m pleased that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed our bipartisan resolution to support democracy and human rights in Pakistan,” said Rep. Kildee. “The people of Pakistan deserve free and fair elections, and their human rights and fundamental freedoms must be respected. We must continue working with Pakistan to ensure democracy, human rights and rule of law are upheld.”
