Mace, S.C. Republican colleagues say no funds to close Marine Corps’ Parris Island site

Federal funds could not be used to close or plan the closure of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island under a Republican bill led by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).

The 8,095-acre military installation located within Port Royal, S.C., could not be closed or realigned under the Parris Island Protection Act, H.R. 473, which Rep. Mace sponsored on Jan. 24 with five GOP original cosponsors all representing South Carolina.

“Since opening over a century ago, Parris Island has served a vital role in the defense of America. Over one million brave Marines have trained at the base and served our country in every conflict since World War I,” Rep. Mace said. “Parris Island is fundamental to our national defense, and it’s vital we continue to make Marines there.”

H.R. 473 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, on which Rep. Mace serves.
