Kim drums up support for SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act

In an effort to provide families with tax relief, U.S. Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) urged her colleagues to support a Republican bill she helped introduce that would fix an unfair loophole in the tax code regarding the state and local tax (SALT) cap.

In comments on the House floor on Wednesday, Rep. Kim spoke in favor of passing the

SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act, H.R. 7160, which the congresswoman helped introduce with U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) on Jan. 31 to increase the state and local tax cap from $10,000 to $20,000 for married couples.

“H.R. 7160 will eliminate the so-called marriage penalty on the state and local tax – or SALT – deduction for families who file their taxes jointly,” said Rep. Kim, who serves as co-chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus.

High mortgage rates and expensive housing costs are making it challenging for first-time homebuyers to purchase homes, she said.

“The SALT cap is not and should not be a blue vs. red issue. We’re simply advocating for our constituents who want us to consider pro-growth, pro-family policies,” the congresswoman said.

H.R. 7160 is under consideration by the House Ways and Means Committee.
