U.S. Rep. John Katko (R-NY) said he supports efforts by the Biden administration to place Harriet Tubman’s likeness on the $20 bill.
“This is a fitting and overdue tribute to a woman who escaped slavery and devoted her entire life to advancing freedom and equality for all people, regardless of their race or gender,” Rep. Katko said on Jan. 25.
In his central New York district, the congressman pointed out that citizens “are honored” Tubman settled there and they “take great pride in celebrating her incredible legacy.”
In 2015, 2017, and 2019, Rep. Katko also pushed for enactment of the bipartisan Harriet Tubman Tribute Act alongside the late U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who passed away in October 2019. The measure also would have directed the U.S. Treasury Secretary to place Tubman’s likeness on the $20 bill.
“I will gladly partner with the Biden administration on any initiative that would accelerate this important tribute,” said Rep. Katko.
