House passes Pfluger-led bill to ensure voting rights of local residents

Legislation led by U.S. Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX) that would prohibit a non-U.S. citizen from voting in a District of Columbia (D.C.) election passed the U.S. House of Representatives on May 23.

The House voted 262-143 to advance the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act, H.R. 192, which would repeal a Washington, D.C., law that went into effect on Feb. 23 allowing non-citizens who meet residency and other requirements to vote in local elections.

“Free and fair elections are a prerequisite for a healthy republic,” Rep. Pfluger said. “The radical D.C. Council decision to allow non-citizens — including illegal aliens and foreign agents — to vote in elections dilutes the voting power of the citizen voter.

“My legislation restores the sanctity of the voting process and ensures that only American citizens are voting in our nation’s capital,” said the congressman.

Rep. Pfluger sponsored H.R. 192 in January 2023 and the bill currently has 24 cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Mike Bost (R-IL), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH). H.R. 192 now advances to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
