House advances Hurd’s bipartisan resolution to set up national AI strategy

A bipartisan resolution sponsored recently by U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) to pursue a national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy on Dec. 8 passed the U.S. House of Representatives.

House Resolution (H.Res.) 1250, which Rep. Hurd introduced on Dec. 4 with cosponsor U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL), would outline how the House would set out principles that should guide the national AI strategy, according to the text of the resolution, which was developed with help from expert stakeholders and the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC).

“With the passage of H.Res. 1250, the House of Representatives has said America will take advantage of technology before it takes advantage of us by putting our nation on the path to retain an edge in AI and secure the next 70 years of American-led international prosperity and security,” Rep. Hurd said last week.

Specifically, the resolution identifies four pillars to guide the AI strategy: Workforce Development, National Security, Research and Development, and Ethical Use.

“Most Americans are unaware we are in a generation-defining new cold war over global leadership of advanced technology and our success in this struggle is not guaranteed,” said Rep. Hurd. “With the improvements that technology is making in our lives on a daily basis, we are also facing significant disruption to our way of life which means American institutions must keep pace with this changing landscape.”

BPC President and Founder Jason Grumet called H.Res. 1250 “a critical step” in America’s ability to meet the challenges of the digital age. “We are hopeful this resolution will lead to a coordinated federal approach on the best way to develop and use this evolving technology,” he said.
