A bipartisan bill offered by U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) to modernize America’s notarization process received approval on Monday from the U.S. House of Representatives and now heads to the U.S. Senate for action.
“I’m excited to see our legislation receive an overwhelming and bipartisan House vote, and I am hopeful the Senate will agree and pass it to be signed into law,” Rep. Armstrong said on Feb. 27 following the House vote.
The Securing and Enabling Commerce Using Remote Electronic (SECURE) Notarization Act of 2023, H.R. 1059, which Rep. Armstrong sponsored on Feb. 17, would allow notaries public to perform remote online notarization in interstate commerce, as well as allow signers located outside of the U.S. to securely notarize documents.
“Remote online notarization offers consumers a convenient way to safely and securely complete documents,” Rep. Armstrong said.
H.R. 1059 garnered 30 cosponsors, including lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and passed the House by voice vote after a motion was made to suspend the rules and approve it.
