Granger announces Texas district receives federal anti-violence grant

U.S. Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), ranking member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, on Oct. 22 announced a federal award to her home-state district that will be used to tackle violence against women on campus.

“Unfortunately, women — especially on college campuses — remain the subject of harassment and assault,” Rep. Granger said on Tuesday. “This grant comes at no better time as our nation observes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) awarded a $298,834 to the Tarrant County (Texas) College District under its Office on Violence Against Women’s (OVW) Grants to Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking on Campus Program.

“As a mother, grandmother and longtime advocate for women, I am proud that our region is leading the charge in the effort to reduce violence against women,” said Rep. Granger.

The congresswoman added that by strengthening the partnership between campuses, local law enforcement, and victim advocacy organizations, “higher education institutions can better prevent and respond to crimes such as sexual assault and domestic violence.”

OVW currently administers 19 grant programs authorized by the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and subsequent legislation that is designed to develop the nation’s capacity to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by strengthening services to victims and holding offenders accountable, according to DOJ.
