Garbarino, Cassidy resolution supports growth, retention of cybersecurity workforce

With recent cyberattacks and vulnerabilities presenting cybersecurity risks in America, there is an increased urgency to grow and sustain a knowledgeable and skilled cybersecurity workforce in both the public and private sectors, according to a bipartisan, bicameral resolution introduced on June 7 by U.S. Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) and U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA).

“In today’s hyper-connected world, cybersecurity is national security,” said Rep. Garbarino, who sponsored House Resolution 1154 alongside lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY) to designate June 2022 as National Cybersecurity Education Month.

If enacted, the resolution also aims to educate Americans on the role of cybersecurity education and would support such efforts at the federal, state and local levels, according to a bill summary provided by the lawmakers.

“As our foreign adversaries grow increasingly sophisticated, it is more important than ever that we fill the cybersecurity talent pipeline to ensure that we can meet rising cyber threats and better protect our future,” said Rep. Garbarino, raking member of the House Homeland Security Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Innovation Subcommittee. “That starts with education and awareness which is why I am proud to join Senators Cassidy and Rosen and Congresswoman Clarke in introducing this bipartisan, bicameral resolution to designate June as National Cybersecurity Education Month and to promote the essential need to improve cybersecurity literacy among K-12 students.”

Sen. Cassidy and U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) introduced their chamber’s version of the resolution.

“Cyberattacks affect all aspects of life and demonstrate the need for stronger protections,” Sen. Cassidy said on Tuesday. “We need a national focus to prioritize cybersecurity education and enhance prevention efforts.”

The resolution is endorsed by Microsoft, SAP America Inc., and CYBER.org.
