Fitzpatrick: ‘Election Day should be a federal holiday’

Election Day would be recognized as a federal holiday under a bipartisan bill proposed on Nov. 7 by U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

“There is no institution more fundamental to our democracy than our elections,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said. “Designating Election Day as a federal holiday will give all Americans more flexibility and accessibility to cast their votes.”

The Election Day Act, H.R. 6267, which Rep. Fitzpatrick sponsored with original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), would designate Election Day, the first Tuesday in November, as a federal holiday.

“At the beginning of this 118th Congress, I was proud to introduce a comprehensive reform package that includes measures to ensure election integrity, guarantee that only American citizens vote in our elections, and standardize absentee vote counting to produce election results quickly,” said Rep. Fitzpatrick. “This bill is the next step.”

Rep. Dingell pointed out that too many Americans still face obstacles when trying to cast their ballots.

“We must always continue moving forward in the fight to make it easier – not harder – for all Americans to exercise this constitutional right and responsibility,” she said. “I’m proud to join Rep. Fitzpatrick in this effort to ensure every American has the ability to make their voices heard.”

H.R. 6267 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
