Emmer sponsors measure to instill performance measures for VA’s same-day services

Legislation introduced on Feb. 24 by U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) would task the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) with developing objectives and performance measures for the VA’s same-day physical and mental health services provided to America’s military veterans.

“Our veterans deserve immediate care,” Rep. Emmer said. “For veterans facing debilitating physical ailments or struggling with an invisible mental illness, their treatment must be immediate.” 

If enacted, the Same-Day Accountability for Veterans Enhancement Act, H.R. 1292, would ensure that the VA’s implementation of the initiative is properly documented for oversight and accountability, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Emmer’s office.

Additionally, H.R. 1292 would require follow-up from the VA on the progress of same-day services, with special attention paid to mental health services and veteran suicide rates, the summary says. 

“While the VA has tried to ensure same-day services, accountability is necessary,” said the congressman. “Oversight of this important program is vital to ensuring our veterans receive timely care.”

H.R. 1292, which has received support from Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Disabled Veterans of America, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
