Curtis sponsors bipartisan Dietary Supplements Access Act

A bipartisan bill recently introduced by U.S. Rep. John Curtis (R-UT) would allow Americans investing in health savings accounts to use pre-tax dollars to purchase dietary nutritional supplements.

“The bipartisan legislation is a big deal for Utahns who use these products to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Rep. Curtis said. “This bill also sends a clear message to consumers that Congress is serious about giving more Americans choice in how they take care of their healthcare needs, as well as the importance of proactive care.”

The Dietary Supplements Access Act, H.R. 5214, sponsored by Rep. Curtis on Sept. 10 with original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), also would permit expenditures from flexible spending arrangements and health reimbursement arrangements for purchasing dietary supplements, according to the text of the bill.

“What works for one person may not work for another, and too often one-size-fits-all policymaking leads to higher costs for consumers and their families,” said Rep. Curtis. “I applaud Rep. Gottheimer in joining me in this effort and urge my colleagues to take this important step with us by supporting our legislation.”

Health-E Commerce, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, and the American Herbal Products Association endorsed H.R. 5214, which has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
