Curbelo touts importance of tax reform for South Florida families

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) highlighted how efforts to advance the nation’s first comprehensive tax reform in 31 years are an opportunity to help families who have not benefited from the economic recovery, including those in South Florida he represents.

Curbelo, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, joined House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and other House leaders on Tuesday in outlining the importance of tax reform at a weekly briefing.

The most important thing that Congress can do for the American people, Curbelo said, “is to pass meaningful tax reduction for every American family; to overhaul the tax codes so that American companies stop leaving the United States and instead invest more here in American infrastructure and in American families.”

Curbelo discussed the need for the economic recovery to reach more households. “This is about thousands of immigrant families in my district who came to this country with a willingness to work, and who love this country as much as everyone else does, yet they are not getting ahead,” he said.

Eager to begin the tax reform process in the House Ways and Means Committee, he added, “We are going to put a product out there that every American is going to be able to see and is going to improve their quality of life in this country.”

Enacting reform would go beyond the impact on taxes or the economy. “This is about us showing that Congress can work together to improve the lives of every American. This is about restoring the faith, the trust, the confidence in our government, which is something that we sorely need in this country.”

Curbelo’s tax reform efforts drew praise from U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), House Republican Conference Chair.

“We are putting American families first, and we’re really pleased that Carlos Curbelo, representative out of Miami, is able to join us today to help put a face on this,” McMorris Rodgers said. “He has a young family, and represents many in this country that are going to be positively impacted.”

Tax reform will lead to more jobs, fairer tax bills and bigger paychecks, she said.
