Curbelo secures federal grant funding for veterans, transit projects in Miami-Dade County

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) recently secured federal grants for a new veteran treatment court and pilot program for transit-oriented development in Miami-Dade County.

Curbelo supported a $350,000 grant for the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office that will be used to establish a special veterans treatment court.

“This court will provide rehabilitative services to veterans who’ve been charged with non-violent crimes and suffer from mental health disorders or substance abuse problems,” Curbelo said. “By allowing veterans to participate in this court, they will be given the opportunity to return to civilian life while still being under the observation of the court. It’s our duty to provide our veterans with the help they need, and I am proud to support them.”

A separate grant would provide approximately $1 million to establish a pilot program designed to guide Miami-Dade County transit-planning efforts.

“I am pleased that Miami-Dade County is the recipient of this grant which will be used to improve transit development in South Florida,” Curbelo said. “This nearly $1 million will provide the county with guidance for future transit planning surrounding the East-West Rapid Transit Corridor which connects important areas of our community, including Miami Intermodal Center and Florida International University. Because the corridor is divided by a main expressway, it’s important that it be planned and executed carefully, and that’s what this grant will help to do.”

Funding for the pilot program was made available the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, H.R. 22, introduced by U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL).
