Collins, Poliquin announce agreement ensuring critical deliveries to island communities

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin (R-ME) announced an agreement on Monday that ensures that critical deliveries will continue to island communities in Maine.

Collins, Poliquin and U.S. Sen. Angus King (I-ME) brokered an agreement that ensures that non-United States Postal Service (USPS) cargo can be delivered to the island communities of Swan’s Island and Frenchboro.

“We are pleased that this agreement has been reached so that the citizens of these island communities can continue to receive their mail in a timely and efficient manner,” Collins, Poliquin and King said in a joint statement. “Maine’s island communities face unique challenges, and it’s critical that government agencies, like USPS, work with those communities to ensure that their needs are accommodated in a way that works for everyone. We are pleased that is what ultimately happened here.”

The legislators’ offices worked with the USPS and community leaders in Swan’s Island and Frenchboro to secure an agreement that ensured continued delivery service to the islands.

“I’d like to thank the congressional delegation for helping restore a service that had been provided to Swan’s Island and Frenchboro for six decades,” Brian Krafjack, the owner of the Island Market & Supply in Swan’s Island, said. “For islands with limited populations it is critical, and just makes sense, that non-USPS cargo is allowed to be transported along with the mail by the same supplier.”
