Cassidy plans to introduce Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) plans to introduce his chamber’s version of a bill that would award withheld taxes to America’s combat-injured Coast Guard veterans.

“Members of the Coast Guard who are wounded protecting our country should be treated the same way as other service members,” Sen. Cassidy said on Nov. 11. “This bill makes sure this happens.”

The Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act in 2016 returned improperly withheld taxes owed to combat-injured veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, but excluded Coast Guard veterans due to a technical error, according to information provided by Sen. Cassidy’s office.

The bipartisan Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act, which Sen. Cassidy will introduce with U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), would fix this error to include payments for Coast Guard veterans. U.S. Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE) and Filemon Vela (D-TX) in June introduced the companion bill, H.R. 3739, in their chamber.

“Members of our Coast Guard and their families deserve to be treated fairly by our tax system,” said Sen. Menendez. “Passing common-sense legislation that ensures our military members and their families are taken care of, during and after their time of service, shows our appreciation to our service members.”
