Capito’s bill supports services for drug addicts and their families

U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) on June 6 introduced a bipartisan, bicameral bill that would establish a $25 million grant program for family community organizations that provide support for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and their families.

“As the addiction crisis continues to hit communities in West Virginia and across the nation, it is clear the devastating impact it is having not only on those struggling with addiction, but their loved ones,” Sen. Capito said.

The Supporting Families Through Addiction Act, S. 1810, which Sen. Capito cosponsored alongside bill sponsor U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), would create the grant program over five years to help increase support services at national and local nonprofit organizations, according to a bill summary provided by the lawmakers.

“The stigma of addiction all too often leaves individuals and their families feeling isolated, ashamed, and unsure where to turn for reliable information and advice,” said Sen. Capito. “This bipartisan legislation will hopefully provide family members with the support, resources, and information they need to assist their loved ones struggling with substance use disorders and in recovery, as well as within their family who are also impacted by it.

The legislation has been referred to the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee for consideration.

U.S. Reps. Dan Meuser (R-PA) and David Trone (D-MD) introduced companion legislation in their chamber, according to Sen. Capito’s staff.
