Capito introduces resolution to designate November as National Lung Cancer Awareness Month

U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) recently unveiled a bipartisan resolution that would designate November as National Lung Cancer Awareness Month and express support for the early detection of lung cancer.

“As a state, West Virginia is disproportionately impacted by lung cancer,” Sen. Capito said on Nov. 20. “As a result, it’s important that we make certain that resources are available to treat West Virginians impacted by lung cancer and provide accessible avenues that promote screening and early diagnosis.”

Sen. Capito joined U.S. Sens. Tina Smith (D-MN), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and others, to introduce the resolution, which states that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women in the United States, accounting for more deaths than colon cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, according to the text of the resolution.

“Identifying November as National Lung Cancer Awareness Month is a start, and it helps bring notice and recognition to this issue in our communities,” said Sen. Capito. “I’m proud to introduce this resolution with my colleagues and I will continue to advocate for life-saving medical resources for the people of our state.”
