Capito announces $2.2M in federal funding for home state recreation area repairs

U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) on April 25 said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will spend more than $2.2 million to repair a popular recreation site in her home state.

The Pioneer Trail in Brooke County, W.Va., which stretches from Wellsburg to Wheeling along the Ohio River, will receive upgrades following flood damage that occurred last year, said Sen. Capito.

“Following flooding disasters, it is important that we work with West Virginia communities to repair damaged infrastructure,” said Sen. Capito, who serves as a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. “This funding will help Brooke County recover from flooding that occurred in February 2018, helping to restore a sense of normalcy for communities in the county.”

The senator noted that “West Virginians work tirelessly to lift their neighbors up following a disaster.”

“I will continue to use my role as chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee to ensure we have the resources we need,” she added.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) joined Sen. Capito in making the FEMA funding announcement last week.

“I applaud FEMA for their continued efforts to help rebuild West Virginia after recent flooding,” he said. “The Brooke Pioneer Trail is a key tourist attraction and recreation area in our great state and it is important that we take measures to protect and repair it so that it can be enjoyed by current residents, visitors and many generations to come.”
