The Public Policy Council of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention recently presented Rep. Jon Runyan (R-N.J.) with its Allies for Action award.
“The suicide rate among our military personnel and veterans is of serious concern,” John Madigan, the senior director of public policy for AFSP said. “It is clear that more must be done to address this national health problem especially as more soldiers return home from Iraq and Afghanistan. We are thankful for Rep. Runyan’s support aimed at addressing this vital issue.”
Runyan said he has made suicide prevention a major priority since entering Congress in 2011. As a member of the Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, he has prioritized raising awareness and securing funding for veterans suicide prevention.
Runyan and Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) have worked for the past two years to secure funding for veterans suicide prevention outreach.
“It is truly an honor to receive this award from AFSP,” Runyan said. “Since coming to Congress, suicide prevention, particularly among our nation’s veterans, has been one of my top priorities.”
Every day, 22 military veterans commit suicide according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“This should be unacceptable to every American,” Runyan said, “It’s both my duty and honor to support the brave men and women who have fought for my freedom and yours.”
