U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY) voted with the majority last week in support of H.R. 2596, also referred to as the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016.
The legislation, which would provide monetary support for agencies within the federal government that work to keep U.S. citizens safe and secure, passed the House on a 247-178 vote.
“I was pleased to support passage of this important legislation that authorizes funding for our national intelligence agencies and programs,” Whitfield said. “Ensuring the safety and security of every American is one of my top priorities in Congress.”
To that end, in addition to fund allocation, the bill seeks to bolster congressional oversight over all current intelligence programs, allowing Congress to review funding decisions, efficiency and compliance with the law.
“It will also (provide) these agencies with the resources they need to combat the current threats posed by ISIS and al Qaeda, protect against cyberattacks and ensure the restrictions on the release or transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay are kept in place,” Whitfield said.
