U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced on Monday that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will provide a $3,734,500 grant to Maine as part of the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP).
The money will be used to support the installation of numerous homeland security strategies, which will be put in place to protect residents of Maine during a catastrophic event or other act of terrorism.
“This investment will help our state prepare for, protect against, and respond to terrorism or catastrophic disaster,” the Senators said in a joint statement. “This program is crucially important to building and delivering the capabilities that help to keep our families and communities safe. This announcement will help the brave men and women who serve as law enforcement and first responders to access the resources needed to protect our great state.”
The SHSP provides funding and support for the implementation of homeland security strategies at the state level to plan and train officials to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism and a myriad of other catastrophic events.
