Subcommittee advances FIRST Act on bipartisan vote

The House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Research and Technology recently advanced a measure cosponsored by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) that would streamline federal research and development investments.

Smith, the chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, and Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) introduced the Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science and Technology Act. The measure would reauthorize federal funding of research by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Standards and Technology that addresses national needs.

The FIRST Act would also prioritize efforts to bolster investments in science, technology, engineering and math educational programs.

“The FIRST Act keeps America first in areas of science and research that are crucial to economic growth,” Smith said. “Our bill focuses taxpayer investments for basic research in critical areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering and mathematics. Advances in these fields drive innovation, create jobs and keep our economy strong….”

The subcommittee advanced the measure on a bipartisan vote on Thursday.

“The FIRST Act also eliminates red tape, accelerates technology transfer and bolsters STEM education,” Smith said. “A well-educated and trained STEM workforce promotes our future economic prosperity. But we must encourage our nation’s youth to study science and engineering so they will want to pursue these careers….”

The measure will next advance to the full House Science, Space and Technology Committee for consideration.
