Bachus stresses job creation through regulatory reform

Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) spent his August work break advocating for job creation.

Bachus’ message at different events was that over-regulation is a major barrier to job creation. Bachus recently spoke at a joint Gardendale Chamber of Commerce gathering, a Rotary luncheon, a Trussville Chamber of Commerce luncheon and a National Federation of Independent Business breakfast.

“Agency regulators, who are not elected, have too little accountability and often have their own agendas,” Bachus said. “The House has passed legislation that would require major rules to come back to Congress for an up-or-down vote before they could take effect.”

The House approved the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act on Aug. 1. The bill, guided by Bachus, would require Congressional approval of significant agency regulations before any new rule can take effect.

“This would give the public more say over the regulations that have a direct impact on their lives, like the regulation that tripled the cost of medical inhalers almost overnight,” Bachus said.

The Judiciary Committee also approved a series of other regulatory reform bills during a markup on July 24. Bills that were sent to the full House for consideration include the Regulatory Flexibility Improvement Act of 2013, the Regulatory Accountability Act of 2013, the Responsibly and Professionally Invigorating Development Act of 2013, and the Sunshine for Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act of 2013.
