Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) recently announced plans to introduced the No ObamaCare Subsidies for Congress Act of 2013 after the August district work period ends.
“Americans continue to lose under President Obama’s health care law,” Capito said. “At the same time the president is unfairly choosing to give businesses a free pass for a year and leave everyday Americans out in the cold, families across the country are bracing for skyrocketing premiums.”
The proposed bill would require that every member of Congress receive the same treatment as the Americans who must purchase an individual health insurance policy from the exchange.
Josh Hicks, a writer for the Washington Post’s Federal Eye blog, said some Americans would qualify for federal premium support under the Affordable Health Care Act.
“But those who make upwards of $170,000, like all members of Congress, would find it hard to qualify without about a half dozen children,” Hicks said.
Capito’s bill would not impact Congressional staff members, only Congressmen and Senators.
“As long as ObamaCare remains law, members of Congress should not receive exchange subsidies that are not provided to other Americans,” Capito said.
Capito serves on the House Financial Services Committee as chair of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.
