Terry joins AmeriCorps in announcing grants to Omaha-based organizations

Rep. Lee Terry (R-Nebr.) recently joined Bill Basl, the director of the Corporation of National and Community Service, to announce two Omaha, Nebr.-based organizations will receive more than $560,000 in AmeriCorps grants.

College Possible Omaha will receive a grant for $228,000 with 20 AmeriCorps members that will provide college preparedness, enrollment and retention services to 600 high school students.

College Possible Omaha will, in addition, receive $111,000 in college scholarships for these members upon the successful completion of their terms of service.

The Nebraska Economic Opportunity Corps with the Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska will receive a grant for $340,686 with 39 AmeriCorps members. The organizations focus on case management, job readiness training and connection services for refugee and immigrant populations. In addition, they provide assistance for low-income families, at-risk youth and veterans and military families in Nebraskan urban and rural areas.

“I’ve been a strong supporter of the AmeriCorps in Congress because I realize the opportunities this program creates for people like our seniors, our veterans or people who came to our country to realize their share of the American Dream, ” Terry said.

An additional amount of $161,117 will be set aside for college scholarships for the AmeriCorps members upon successful completion of their terms of service.
