Fourth graders celebrate “Read Across America Day” with Rep. Hanna

U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna visited the New York Mills Elementary School to celebrate “Read Across America Day” with a class of fourth graders, along with millions of other students across the nation.

“Reading opens
you up to the world and can take you anywhere,” Hanna said. “The
ability to read can and will change your life. It is the single most
valuable skill you can learn, and I encourage you to keep reading today
and every day. So, read with your classmates, with your parents and read
alone. You’ll be surprised where you can go with a good book.”

The celebration, planned by the National Education Association (NEA), encourages American students to read widely and deeply. The annual celebration also marks Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The teachers, Tiffany Schmidt and Jennifer Sroka, celebrated the day by reading students passages from Dr. Seuss’ famous book Oh, the Places You’ll Go. Hanna participated in the reading. Kathy Houghton, New York Mills’ superintendent, and Elementary School Principal Dr. Renee Wilson also attended the event.

“We are proud of all of our students and teachers here at New York Mills and the emphasis we place on educational excellence, and that starts with literacy,” Wilson said. “There is no better way to expand your imagination, develop your mind and discover new things than by diving into a good book. Words, spoken or written, nourish our lives, and New York Mills is proud to celebrate the NEA’s ‘Read Across America Day’ with Congressman Hanna.”
