Miller congratulates BAE for lucrative Army contract

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) congratulated BAE Systems on Christmas Eve after the British multinational defense, aerospace and security company, signed a $1.2 billion contract with the U.S. Army.

The company, which has production facilities in Sterling Heights, Michigan, will design and build a new Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV).

“I congratulate BAE Systems,” Miller, who is also vice chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, said. “This is a major and well-deserved win for them as well as the U.S. Army that will undoubtedly improve the mobility and safety of our servicemen and women in combat.

The contract will be executed in several phases. The first segment is for 52 months, during which BAE will produce 29 of the vehicles for $383 million. Upon completion of the first phase, the contract expands to an additional 289 vehicles for $1.2 billion.

“This contract also underscores BAE’s proven track record and capability in defense manufacturing, which helps make Southeast Michigan the heartland of American innovation,” Miller said.

BAE is expected to commence work on the project immediately and will utilize its facilities in Sterling Heights as well as York, Pennsylvania.

The company is assembling a team for the project, which involves a number of other corporations, including DRS Technologies, Northrop Grumman Corporation and Air Methods Corporation,  as well as the Red River Army Depot.
